Science Idol Finalists

The Union of Concerned Scientists has announced the top 12 finalists for their Science Idol editorial cartoon contest, and voting has begun to determine the winner of the grand prize.

Direct voting page is here. The names of all the entrants are not given, so I don't know if there's any other showing from the webcomics community, but my own entry is number 6 and Bryant Paul Johnson's (of Teaching Baby Paranoia) is number 5.

Chinese Translation

My brother emailed me this cool Flash-animated M. Ward video that I wanted to share:

It was apparently made by Joel Trussell et. al. (Thanks to Kazu for the identification.) Mr. Trussell has a sweet blog and a higher-resolution version of the animation here.

Thomas Dolby Notes Wapsi Square Lyric Use

Thomas Dolby described a recent Wapsi Square comic as "appropriat[ed] material" as it quotes from his She Blinded Me With Science song. It's hard to judge from Dolby's comments how seriously he meant his comment and there doesn't appear to be any follow up on his blog.

But it may be an area where independent comic creators need to learn a bit about copyright law to avoid problems. Wapsi Square creator Paul Taylor has had his characters quote song lyrics before (here and here) and I'm actually not sure offhand what the standard for this situation is so I'm not assuming Wapsi Square has done anything wrong.

But I do recall that on at least one time in the past it's been a problem. Pete Abrams decided to remove some song lyrics from a Sluggy Freelance storyline called "Fire and Rain" due to concerns over possible copyright issues.

New

Hey everyone,

I've put together a site for my webcomics at www.RyRyComics.com. I've been doing comics for years now but am behind on getting off my ass and making a website. So here it is, hopefully you will be as serious about not taking things as serious as I am. Hope that makes sense.

Quick Site Note: Feature Changes

I'm turning off some features to see how that helps with site performance so if something gets turned off that's most likely the reason why.

Also I've turned the toplist back on but I've turned the button rankings off (that's a heavy load on the server) so although list members now won't see their ranking on the buttons on their sites the list is still working the same.

United Media to syndicate Diesel Sweeties to newspapers and run on Comics.com

[Xerexes: Wizard has an interview with Rich on this - turns out that Ted Rall (who is scouting talent for United) was key to this deal.]

Through a new syndication deal with United Feature Syndicate, Inc. (aka United Media), R Stevens' webcomic Diesel Sweeties will begin running in newspapers starting on January 8, 2007. Here's how Stevens made the announcement on his site...

The Spires - bringing colour to Tuesdays!

Go to The SpiresIt's Tuesday! Okay, it's not the most thrilling day of the week but never let it be said that Broken Voice Comics doesn't do what it can to brighten it up! Our quest to convert the whole of The Spires into living, breathing colour continues and you can see the latest colour page from Bill Key right here!

(Be warned, though ... this is another of those pages which should not be seen by anyone who believes a little nudity could yet bring about the fall of Western civilisation!)
