We’re back on our feet, folks!

As you may or may not have heard, on Saturday a transformer in the electrical room powering schlockmercenary.com (and 9,000 other web servers) exploded. It took out three walls, but (ironically) left the fourth wall intact. Obviously the transformer in question was a Decepticon. I’m blaming that annoying little “Soundwave” guy. He’s a sneaky one.
Okay, seriously… we’ve been running on shoestrings and hacking coughs for three days.

Comics as a Binary Language

Laraudogoitia, Jon Pérez. 2008. The Comic as a Binary Language: An Hypothesis on Comic Structure. Journal of Quantitative Linguistics 15 (2):111-135. This study examines the structure of comics by converting the contents of panels into binary code. Coding a broad number of Eurpoean comics, a panel holding the protagonist of a story ("lead character") is given a "+" while a panel without is given

Parens. Reading in New York

My play Parens. has been selected for a public reading as part of the City Attic Theatre’s C.A.T. Tales new play festival! This is the second time I’ve worked with this company — Cubicles was included in their first C.A.T. Tales festival a couple of years ago, and I had a great time working with them. If you’re in NY, I hope you’ll consider coming out. I’m not sure what the ticket price will be, but probably not much. I’ll update with more info as soon as I know more.

Local Heroes: Strip 138

 Local Heroes, Strip 138

The time-lost Dr. Tomori seems to have a good reason for not wanting to return to the future with Squire.

The one post in which I'm not rooting for the super-villain...

You're probably already aware of the Orphan Works Act. In short, Google is behind a move to radically change copyright law so they, and others, can display cartoons (as well as other things) with no regard to copyright. Someone could take one of my (or your) cartoons, remove the creator's name and post it anywhere for profit. The cartoonist would be responsible for tracking it down. Even then, the violator is only responsible for giving you a small one-time usage fee and is not liable for any damages. And the only way one can protect yourself is to upload everything you've...

The AV Club reviews “Penny Arcade Adventures”

I love the AV Club game reviews, as they tend to tackle esoteric games that most places just gloss over (if they recognize them at all). For example, the site once reviewed free browser-based games “Urban Dead” and “ForumWarz.” Today, they sink their teeth into the game based on the webcomic about videogames: [...]

Totally last minute!

I'll be appearing tomorrow night on the The Comic Book Club with fellow guests Brian Heater (The Daily Cross Hatch) and Liz Baillie (My Brain Hurts)!

Webcomics Weekly Podcast: Episode 35

Check out the often-imitated-never-duplicated Webcomics Weekly Podcast, featuring Scott Kurtz, Dave Kellett, Kris Straub, and myself. If you love listening to cartoonists talking shop, this is a must. You can keep up with the latest updates via our RSS feed. Episode 35: Long before there was the Webcomics Weekly Podcast, there was the Blank Label Comics Podcast, a project spearheaded by Dave and Kris. Since Scott and I were both unavailable last Friday, Dave and Kris paired up once again to bring us a reminder of what made these two guys so popular with BLCP. Listen now!

Back from Vacation, Lost finale viewed, priorities straight.

Mom and I got back from North Carolina late yesterday, so I didn't get the chance to watch the Lost finale until this morning and OHMYGOOOOOODDDDD. I'd like to point out that most of the time I have a mad hate-on for movie love (I literally wanted to claw my eyeballs out during a recent viewing of Across the Universe, although the Bono cameo was worth it), but I shrieked and then up and blubbered moronically when Desmond and Penny were reunited. OMG their love so spans time and space and cannot be defeated by surprisingly mobile miracle islands. Months until the next new episode! Woe.

Superman: Man Of Style Redesign Contest

Superman: Man of Style

I'm very excited. I dropped Dean Trippe over at Project:Rooftop a note a couple weeks back about Superman's 70th anniversary coming up, and how it'd be as good a time as any to break P:R's very own rule about redesigning the Superman costume. He agreed, got coordinated with a LOT of people in a real short amount of time (I'm impressed!), and LOOK!
