Hero By Night
Platinum Pays DJ Coffman

DJ Coffman blogs again about his ongoing issues with Platinum over the Hero By Night comic. Coffman states that he's now paid in full and that Platinum has terminated his consultant contract with them. Final results? Coffman paid what he's owed; Platinum boxing up Hero By Night like the Ark of the Covenant. Platinum owns the copyright on it so it can do what it wants, including never doing anything with it again.
Another Platinum/DJ Coffman Update

DJ Coffman blogs more about his attempts to get some of the rights to Hero By Night returned from Platinum. Earlier this spring Coffman blogged about shutting down production on the comic book Hero By Night because Platinum hadn't been paying him and other creators working on the book. Coffman, understandably, has tried to be careful to layer his concerns within praise for Platinum -- he remains one of the company's biggest boosters online. One wonders if Platinum will do the right thing by Coffman or just not do anything at all...
In related, but better for Coffman news, his other webcomic Yirmumah returned to Keenspot this month.

Hero By Night Publication Suspended
Submitted by Xaviar Xerexes on June 2, 2008 - 09:10
D.J Coffman explains in his blog that he has stopped work on the Platinum published comic book, Hero By Night, because of "financial issues at our publisher". Hero By Night issue #4 apparently is partially done but won't be released on schedule because the colorist, Jason Embury has also stopped work on it. The "financial issues" are not explained but it does appear that Coffman and Embury were not getting paid at all or on time by Platinum for recent work on Hero By Night. Coffman suggests the possibility of taking Hero By Night the full webcomic route but doesn't seem to have made any decisions yet.
While Coffman seems to emphasize a continuing good relationship with Platinum (he seems to indicate future projects to come with the publisher) I can't imagine this news about the 2006 Comic Book Challenge winner will be good for the 2008 Comic Book Challenge contest. Just last week Platinum changed the rules on its contest to allow entrants to pitch via video (instead of making the trip in-person to San Diego, CA) and extended the deadline from May 31st to June 14th.

Mr Myth on D.J. Coffman's Hero By Night:
With the Hero by Night Journals, DJ managed to capture that same sense of background and history, all neatly defined and delineated. Neither the journals nor the comic were able to grab me independantly - one was the shadow of an already finished tale, the story of a hero whose time had already ended, while the other was no different than countless other comics, with a kid finding a magic widget and blundering into superpowers. But together they formed something more than the sum of their parts - a story with a firm sense of past and present, which manages to keep the read all the more interested in the comic’s future.
